Colorado Summer Hailstorms: How to Spot Storm Chasers and Choose a Trusted Roofer

The 2025 summer hail season has already been one of the most active in recent memory across northeast Colorado. When a major storm rolls through Fort Collins, Greeley, Loveland, or the plains east of I-25, two things happen within 48 hours: legitimate local roofers get busy, and out-of-state door-knockers show up in force.

Those door-knockers — the industry calls them storm chasers — are the single biggest reason Colorado homeowners end up with botched claims, half-finished roofs, and no one to call when a leak appears three winters later.

What a Storm Chaser Looks Like

They pull into a neighborhood within a day or two of a hailstorm, often in a rented truck with a magnetic sign on the door. The pitch is almost always the same:

  • "We noticed your neighbor's roof — yours has damage too."
  • "We can get insurance to pay for a full replacement. Just sign here."
  • "We'll waive your deductible." (This is insurance fraud in Colorado.)
  • "We need to start today — supplies are limited."

By the time the roof is installed, the company has left the state. If a warranty issue comes up, the phone number is disconnected.

How to Vet a Roofer After a Hailstorm

Every legitimate roofer in Colorado will pass every one of these checks. If a contractor fails any of them, walk away.

  • Physical local address — not a PO box, not a cell phone. A real office you could drive to.
  • Colorado business registration and roofing-specific licensing for your municipality.
  • Manufacturer certification. GAF Master Elite status is held by less than 2% of roofers in North America — it requires years of local track record and cannot be transferred between crews.
  • Named insurance liaison who works with your carrier, not around them.
  • Multi-year local reviews — Google reviews spanning several years, not a burst of five-star reviews from the last 30 days.
  • Written warranty from the manufacturer, in your name, that survives the contractor leaving the market.

Why Local Matters More Than Price

Colorado's hail patterns, wind exposure, and insurance code are unlike anything an out-of-state crew has installed for before. Ventilation, ice-and-water shield placement, drip edge fastening — the details a local roofer gets right without thinking are the exact details a storm chaser gets wrong.

When the next storm hits — and it will — the roof installed by a local contractor is the one that holds. The roof installed by a storm chaser is the one that leaks and can't be warrantied because the company is gone.

How NOCO Roofing Handles a Storm Claim

As a family-owned Northern Colorado company with 40+ years of local experience and GAF Master Elite certification, we do things a storm chaser physically cannot:

  • Free, no-pressure hail damage inspection with written documentation and photos.
  • Direct coordination with your insurance adjuster through our in-house insurance liaison specialists.
  • One project manager, from your first call to final walk-through, so nothing falls through the cracks.
  • GAF System Plus and Golden Pledge warranties that stay valid as long as your roof exists — because we're still here to honor them.

If a Door-Knocker Just Left Your Porch

Don't sign anything. Don't hand over your insurance information. Take a business card, close the door, and call a local roofer for a second opinion. If you're in Northern Colorado, that's us: (970) 223-7663. The inspection is free, the advice is honest, and we'll still be here in ten years if something needs attention.
